Safety Gear!

Bright Ideas!

1. Safety Gear Fashion Show

Recruit local companies that you’ve worked with, safety equipment suppliers, technical education teachers, friends or relatives who have safety gear to help you put together a box of safety gear for your class. There’s no better way for your students to get to know safety equipment than to try it on to get the feel of it and to practice doing it up and adjusting it so they know how it’s supposed to fit before needing to use it at work. Get a few hard hats, pairs of safety glasses, goggles, safety vests, disposable ear plugs (one pair per person), ear muffs, gloves or whatever you can gather. Why not have a safety “fashion show” to have the students wear the equipment and describe it to the rest of the class!

2. Neighbourhood Safety Gear Hunt

On your next outing as a group, or as an exercise for students to do on their own, have them note different types of safety gear they see being worn in their community. This can be done in a verbal report, or perhaps a “bingo” card could be created so students can mark off the safety gear they observe.

It’s easy to spot construction workers wearing hard hats and hearing protection, workers wearing reflective vests while directing traffic or firefighters wearing protective clothing and hats. Below is a bingo card for your use.
